Nightlife in Cagayan de Oro – Where to Party like a Rockstar in the City of Golden Friendship

You work virtually the whole week, and then, Friday night or Saturday night finally arrives. There’s no reason for you to stay home when you can unwind, stress out, and – in the words of many – party, party! In fact, these are the nights that you can probably go out and party like a rockstar.

Cagayan de Oro is a bustling and progressive metropolis and this clearly shows in the number of establishments that cater to the city’s nightlife. In fact, even visitors from other major cities like Manila and Cebu are surprised by the city’s exciting night life scenes.

The nightlife in Cagayan de Oro is a mix of dance clubs, bars, and videoke places that are usually open from around 7:00 p.m. through to midnight and beyond. Most night outfits are filled to the brim on Friday and Saturday nights, the usual “owl hours” to unwind and release stress. There are night places in the city that will cater to suit all (adult) ages or preference.

Pulse Bar

This is probably CDO’s oldest and most famous dance club and bar located at the corner of Hayes Street and Tiano Bros. Street. It used to be named Xcite, and when you enter the place it will definitely excite your dance legs. The place and ambiance can be described as being at par with the best dance bars that can be found in Davao and Cebu. The place is actually a bit large and usually on Friday nights and weekends the place is filled to standing capacity. It has the usual DJ-blasting dance mix music, but what makes Pulse unique are the daily gimmicks that it comes up with to attract a regular clientele for each day. Php100.00 is the normal entrance fee.

Drinks served are a mix of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Beer is usually sold individually or in “buckets” of 6 bottles. Other alcoholic beverages can be sold by the bottle or by shots. To liven up Mondays, they have “Mad Monday” that features free entrance as well as a Videoke Night. On selected Tuesdays they have “Tequila Nights” with a Tequila body shot contest and laser light show. Wednesday is “Ladies Night” so all the ladies have free entrance. Saturday is the regular party night. Sundays (yes, Sundays, to liven up the end of the week, perhaps) features a sexy dance contest from the ladies in the audience. The girls in the audience get to pool in money and the girl who gets the most deafening audience impact wins the pot money. Events like dance contests and bikini opens are regularly held at Pulse.

LED KTV and Bar

led ktv and bar

This rather large place is located on Corrales Avenue. For those who prefer to just chill out without the large crowds and loud umph-umph-umph dance mixes, here’s a place where you can sing your heart out (and your voice hoarse) and even dance to some tunes. What’s nice about going to a videoke bar is that your family or friends won’t mind if you sing your horse voice hoarse (pun very much intended).

led bar cagayan de oro

This bar is like an all-in-one entertainment hub with even its own acoustic or live band area, dance club bar, videoke bar, and even a restaurant for those who just want to eat and relax while listening to music. LED is actually considered the most popular videoke bar place in the city and is usually filled to capacity on Fridays up to the weekend. It is also open for reservations for large groups for parties and other occasions.

The Lifestyle District

One of the newest night spots in the city and conveniently located on Corrales Avenue Extension in front of the Capitol University. It is an all-in-one awesome nightlife area that is really hot right now, often with the place even filled up during weekdays. This is where the city’s classy and elite party people go for the ultimate party experience while the rest can enjoy the night spot’s other amenities. It comes complete with a videoke venue, restaurants, cafes, bars, dessert hubs, and even live or acoustic bands in the open area at night. It is the ultimate revolutionary concept in the convergence of different lifestyle tastes. Some of the best places inside the district include:

  • Illest Bar
illest bar cagayan de oro

It’s a drinking lounge, Asian Fusion restaurant, and dance bar all rolled into one. The dance beat mixes and mixed menu of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks is just something to party for. According to the manager, the name is a play on the word, “sickest,” since another word for sick is ill. Get it?

  • Microphone Hero
microphone hero lifestyle district

Again, for those with no taste to party with large and noisy crowds, here’s a place that’s growing in popularity. This is because the videoke place is set up so that a person singing has to do it on stage (seats and microphones available to sit or for duets) and there are three large screens so that even those with ill-eyesight can see the lyrics.

And the sound system is first class, with a wide selection of songs. There different room rates based on the size of the videoke rooms. Each room even has a singer or group name like the ABBA room or the Michael Jackson room.

  • Junno Deli Café and Restaurant
junno delicafe

You might want to really look closely for this one inside the Lifestyle District since it’s located almost at the rear of the area. It’s a nice and cozy place with the ambience of eating in an Italian restaurant, minus the Italian language and the spaghetti. Well, it’s actually a Dutch place but Italian is the first impression that people get. It’s a nice place for intimate settings or small group gatherings just to talk. Aside from the good food, this is probably one of the few places in the city that sells San Miguel Draft Beer and a wide selection of wines. Diet begone, the steaks are actually “to die for.”

In a Filipino culture, we highly value our rich tradition that Filipino women must undertake courtship stage first to prove that the guy has sincerity and has genuine feelings towards the lady. Our traditional dating is known for being restrained and contains stages compared to other culture. Before you can ask a girl out for a dinner date, you must also ask permission to her parents and gain their trust. It’s not only the girl you love must be courted, also her parents.

Entering in a relationship here is not like a game and definitely, not just for fun. That’s why, our courtship has phases which is really helpful so both the guy and the girl has more time to deal with getting-to-know each other stage.

When the girl says ‘yes’ to the guy, that’s the right time that the guy can finally call the girl his girlfriend. What’s also valued in the Philippines’ dating scene is the guy must continue to win the heart of his girl although they are already together. In that way, the girl will be even more fallen for the guy and successfully win her heart naturally.

So if you are planning to court a Filipina or if you already gained her sweet ‘yes’ but still want to prove to her that she’s very special in your life, you can simply set a romantic dinner date for the both of you.

This will really be great news for night owls, weekend party-goers, band music lovers, or just for those looking for some fun, music, and drinks to unwind after a week of stressful work. Another milestone in Cagayan de Oro’s nightlife has been added with the opening of the lively Empire Music Lounge at the Lifestyle District along Corrales Avenue Extension.

Its opening was marked with a VIP pre-opening gala that featured live bands and, of course, plenty of beer and other liquor, that was offered free only for those invited. The featured bands were Herbal Remedies and Upstart. This pre-opening gala is actually on a “per invite” and RSVP basis because they needed to count heads as to how many were actually going. It was called the “Privilege Party” as a sort of sneak peak as to what Empire Music Lounge is all about.

Herbal Remedies generally belted out reggae and soft rock covers and originals while Upstart was more into pop and soft rock.

What Is A Wine Shop?

IMG_1539

In reality, the concept of wine bars, wine shops, and wine cellars was never really accepted worldwide since it was a business originally focused solely to selling only wine by the bottle or by the glass. It wasn’t until the early 2000’s when many wine shops began to diversify by also selling other liquor and even beer.

IMG_1535

Likewise, many wine shops began having their own bars while selling wine, liquor, and beer, thus attracting a new clientele, now mostly millennials. Today, wine shops are a very popular getaway for people seeking a quieter atmosphere away from the noisy atmospheres of regular liquor bars and music lounges.

IMG_1508

Modern wine shops now even have their own kitchen to serve gourmet meals and finger foods that will go well with their wines and liquor.

A Unique Wine Shop in Cagayan de Oro City

Here in Cagayan de Oro City, a unique and unorthodox wine shop called The Wine Cellar has opened those somewhat hidden doors to fine wines and other liquor and beers since it opened last June 28, 2013.

IMG_1581

Many locals passing by its location along J.R. Borja Extension at the Great Spot Arcade, next to Lefty’s, Oliver’s Pizza, and Steve’s Barbecue are often perplexed with what The Wine Cellar is all about. This is probably because it was known as Forth & Tay when it opened back in 2012.

IMG_1543

The name has changed and the proprietorship is the same and all the unique wine and liquor experience you probably only see in movies or TV programs are there for you to discover. You will find many wines there that you would normally see only in fashion or food magazines, or perhaps on your trips to Manila or Cebu.

A Wine Shop is Born in the City

Oliver Hill together with Bryan King (Owner of LogicBase Interactive LLC and About Cagayan de Oro)

Oliver Hill together with Bryan King (Owner of LogicBase Interactive LLC and About Cagayan de Oro)

It all started with the proprietor, Roxanne Hill, and her husband, Oliver Hill, who simply wanted to make wines and liquor more accessible to Cagayanons, and they weren’t talking about the varieties you normally find in supermarkets.

IMG_1546

Naturally, they explored the city and discovered that there was not a single wine shop operating in the metropolis. Thus, what started as a passion, a business sense, and with some ideas from their daughter, The Wine Cellar would then be born, though with a different name back then.

Naturally, the wine shop offers wines that appeal to all classes. Surprisingly, according to Oliver during his interview with aboutcagayandeoro.com, their biggest market are the young female professionals or young female business owners who enjoy coming together for the weekends. They also naturally attract a lot of millennials and a regular clientele of middle aged professionals.

What You Find Inside and the General Atmosphere

IMG_1514

The Wine Cellar opens at 5:00 p.m. onwards. The atmosphere inside is very peaceful, quiet, and perfect for conversations, even if you have a table on the outside. It’s a big difference from all the noise from bars and other drinking holes you find in the city.

During weekends there is a bit of a large crowd at The Wine Cellar but the atmosphere is still kind of peaceful, occasionally punctuated by bursts of laughter and giggly conversations.

20150725_232525

The majority of the wines and liquors that they sell aren’t available in major supermarkets in the city, or in any supermarket for that matter. This is because many of their products come directly from the manufacturers or wineries all over the Philippines or are imported from other parts of the world.

20150725_232602

They have wine and liquor from the finest wineries from Chile, New Zealand, France, Italy, the United States, South Africa, Spain, and more countries. Some of the collection were even personally selected and purchased by Roxanne and Oliver on their travels to other countries. And the wine and liquor collection is so wide and varied that the price tags range from the very affordable to the very hefty especially for the rare or hard-to-find brands.

If they don’t have it, they can order it for you from anywhere in the world. When you visit the wine shop you are even encouraged to mix your own favorite cocktails if you know how to.

Events and Promos

For Fridays and Saturdays they have a promotion called Unlimited Margaritas. Prices start at P229.00 and you get to savor The Wine Cellar bestsellers: Mango Margarita and Strawberry Margarita.

20150726_001007

The wine shop is open during weekdays for any type of gathering from birthdays, meetings, small conferences, product presentations, and even weddings. However, the weekend is for the regular clientele who regularly go there to enjoy the drinks and food. You can call to make table reservations. Wi-Fi access is free so you have great internet access for your mobile devices.

Prices and Bestsellers

Prices usually start off at P290 per bottle, with the highest prices normally left to the imagination, especially for the rare bottles and special orders.

Their bestsellers are usually wide ranging, depending on the clientele or even their mood. It can be the Flamenco, Mitchells, Chardonnay, or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Aside from the wine, their other bestsellers are their vodka, champagne, whiskey, rhum, and scotch.

The Wine Cellar is a great place where classy people come to grab a few glasses of wine, unwind and have fun, meaningful conversations with friends. It’s far from the noise and irritating crowd you get from local bars/entertainment venues. If what you’re looking for is a special place where you can gather with your friends and somewhere you can call your second home, this is definitely the right place for you!

Cagayan de Oro City’s nightlife is a balanced mix that suits everyone’s specific tastes. A mixture of nightclub bars, music bar lounges, dance club bars, bingo and gaming halls, evening sports, restaurants, and videoke bars dot the different areas in and around the city. These night spots are normally open at the break of dusk until past midnight, depending on the crowd intensity. There is always something in CDO’s nightlife to suit all within legal age and preferences. This only goes to show how vibrant and cosmopolitan a city CDO has become.

nightlife in cdo

Though still a far cry from the insomniac nightlife of Manila and Cebu, Cagayan de Oro can now boast of its share of nightlife bars that are at par with the best that other cities can show off. There are bars that allow everyone to let loose and have all the awesome fun, dancing, and drinking with friends or family while there are bars that simply have piped in music and drinking for a conversational evening. Whatever your rave or crowd, the City of Golden Friendship has got you covered, so all you have to do is to pick out from these newly opened bars around town, if you’re planning to paint the town red tonight, on any night, or during the weekend. Having only opened last August 8, the crowd here is always on point and fresh, but never rowdy. It is located on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Consortium Building along Corrales Avenue Extension (just after the Gaisano City Mall parking area).

They have blaring dance tunes from local DJ’s like DJ Red,  and Miss J. On special events they get to invite popular DJ’s such as their recent Fiesta Madness last August 28 and 29 featuring Cebu City’s GIO V of Liv Superclub and NIX DAMN P, an international DJ who played really slick and bouncy tunes during the two-day event.

They also guested a flak-kicking girl duo named The Zombettes. Somewhere Else is open starting at 5:00 p.m.

The DJ music mixing starts at around 9:00 or 9:30 p.m. They usually stay open until 1:00 a.m. on Sunday to Thursday while on Fridays and Saturdays they close at 3:00 a.m., tops. They serve a wide selection of local and foreign beers and liquor, though the foreign beers seem to be catching on with the crowd especially on weekends. Jack Daniels and tequila also seems to be a hard favorite for some groups. On one night, the owners, Marian Rivera and Mikoy Yap even spotted former Senator Migz Zubiri for a boy’s night out.

And if in case you can’t finish the large liquor bottle that you ordered, you can write your name on it they’ll keep it in their shelves for the next time you come and visit. You can call ahead especially before weekends because their tables tend to get sold out before the week ends.

Conclusion

Many often say that the end of amplified DJ dance lounges may be just over the horizon as live band music and live dance band music is slowly making a comeback in the whole country, Cagayan de Oro notwithstanding. However, enter any of the bars mentioned above and you’ll feel that amplified music bars and lounges still have a long way to go, especially in this city in which one day, it will finally garner a name as one of those cities that never sleeps with its nightlife scene.

Flamenco Café and Bar: Spanish and European Concept Coupled with Fusion Menus and Desserts

flamenco decors

Flamenco Café and Bar is a café, restaurant, and bar all rolled into one and as soon as you enter the place you might feel like you stepped into a wormhole and ended up in one of those small, quaint, and cozy Spanish or European home restaurant bars on the continent.

Flamenco staff

The place is very comfortable, the décor is definitely authentic, and the food is a reason to keep coming back. It’s one of those places that’s actually smack dab in the middle of the city and yet away from all those busy malls, districts, and drinking holes where large crowds seem to congregate.

Flamenco inside

Flamenco Café and Bar is located at Capistrano Street corner Gomez Street, though if you measure it the place is much nearer probably to Burgos Street.

The “Flamenco” Concept

Flamenco counter area

The idea and concept for Flamenco all started after the business partners and owners went on group tours to Europe, particularly in Spain, in 2010. On these trips they noticed that most restaurants, cafes, and bars in those countries were not very expensive places and some were simply extensions of homes. Many of these were simple family owned businesses and were passed down from several generations to the present. The common ambience was cozy, homey, and welcoming in a family way. This was the concept that the owners wanted to imbibe into Flamenco.

The name “Flamenco” is derived from the famous Spanish dance. Admittedly, the owners had a hard time to pronounce the name since they were used to the more common word “flamingo” which is a common bird species. Aside from the Spanish concept, the name also conjures a feminist concept, which is obvious in the design of the place.

Flamenco dance

The restaurant went on a soft opening in December 2011. Since the city was hit by a weather disaster that extremely damaged the city and its inhabitants, the owners decided to curtail the restaurant operations and eventually launched officially six months after.

That Flamenco Experience

The owners are very particular when it comes to the consistency of the taste of their foods. Anything cooked on day 1 should taste the same when it is cooked and served on day 100. This is because return customers are often particular and familiar with their favorites and so any variation in the taste will right away be noticeable. Also, their buffets never have what is termed as “return dishes.” Every buffet they serve will always have a different lineup.

Flamenco Dinner Buffet

Flamenco Dinner Buffet

The food is a mixture of Spanish, Filipino, American, and other international dishes, this fusion menu concept mostly coming from their main chef/owner. Team Acadeo got the chance to try out their dinner buffet and we really loved the delicious foods that were served!

Their best sellers are their Cracked Bread, Clam Chowder, Shepherd’s Pie, Asian Pasta and noodle meals, Kinilaw, Pork Sisig, Bangus Sisig, and Baby Back Ribs.

Flamenco Cracked Bread

Flamenco Cracked Bread

According to the owners, their Baby Back Ribs are more than competitive with the best the city can offer. Their cracked bread is also a hit with students and professionals alike. For desserts, their best sellers are the Tablea Cake, Ube Leche and Cookie Ala Mode.

What makes the food at Flamenco so inviting is the affordability. Aside from the expats, foreign visitors, and professionals who visit regularly, part of their mainstay are also students, a testament to the affordable prices the restaurant offers.

Flamenco window

When the restaurants opened and up to the present, Flamenco became somewhat of a haven for many expats and foreign visitors in Cagayan de Oro because of the food they serve.

Flamenco painting decor

The restaurant can have a singer or an acoustic band only on special occasions, events, or on request for exclusive parties.

The Sibling and Business Partner Complementation

The business corporation of Flamenco is an awesome combination of two siblings complementing each other through cooking and baking partnered with one of the most lethal immigration and family courts lawyer in the city.

Eva Madrid is a businesswoman by nature and is the dessert specialist of the restaurant. She is the younger sister of Edna. She is a Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) graduate from Lourdes College. She gained her knowledge in icing and baking from special courses both from CDO and US where she gets to visit from time to time.

Flamenco Owner

Ms. Eva Madrid

Edna Madrid-Besinga presently works at Gawad Kalinga but also divides her time as a full-time chef for the restaurant. She is the elder sister of Eva. Having managed a large restaurant chain at famous Malls, when it comes to the large buffets, Edna gets busy in the kitchen and whips up very special dishes in large batches. She is a graduate of BSBA Marketing from Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and she also got her masters from Xavier University. In spite of her passion for cooking she never enrolled in any culinary school. She is married with 6 kids.

Flamenco Proprietor

Mrs. Edna Madrid-Besinga

Atty. Alejandro Jose “Joe” Pallugna is a Math graduate of De La Salle University and AB Economics at Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan. He is a Law graduate from Xavier University. He is presently an immigration and family courts lawyer as well as a businessman.

The Holiday Season

Cupcake setup

The approach of December usually finds the restaurant almost fully booked for small holiday parties and meetings. The place can be booked exclusively for around 25 to 30 persons, more if you include the outer non-air-conditioned bar area. Their usual party meal package runs at around P6,000 inclusive of a buffet and drinks for four hours. Aside from the food the partygoers can choose either videoke singing or a live singer.

Halloween Cupcakes

Opening soon, an exclusive Poker Club will set up at the back of the restaurant. The membership is exclusive and limited to a maximum of 30 and only poker will be played. The membership fee is a one-time payment only, but no walk-in players are allowed. Regular members may bring in visitor players only once, but visitors can only play if there is a vacancy. Only poker chips will be used for the games.

Conclusion

Acadeo interviewing owners

What makes Flamenco Café and Bar unique is not only the quaint concept of the place but also their unique lineup of delicious foods and dishes offered at very affordable prices. Like a jungle paradise or a desert oasis, it may be hidden from plain sight, but once discovered, it’s a place that you may want to visit every now and then and savor their really good food. But don’t take our word for it; you need to go there and try out the place yourself.

Most Famous and Long Running KTV Bars in Cagayan de Oro

$

Filipinos love to sing! There’s no doubt about that and you can hear Pinoys belting out songs in different “self-made keys” at party sing-alongs, at home with a DVD-KTV player, and of course, around the city’s popular KTV bars. In truth, it is an accepted fact that Filipinos don’t sing at KTV’s to display their good voice but rather do it as a sort of stress release. This is why everyone is encouraged to sing and it doesn’t matter if you have a voice worse than Ann Curtis so long as you can belt out your stress and sorrows.

A little KTV historical fun

Karaoke

Literally, KTV means Karaoke Television. Originally, karaoke was the more common term before it became digitalized. Karaoke is a play on two Japanese words, “kara” (empty), and “okesutora” (orchestra), literally, “empty orchestra.” When Daisuke Inoue invented the first coin-operated song playing machine in the 1970’s, he only recorded the instrumental music minus the vocals. He then leased these machines to hotels, restaurants, and other entertainment centers. The Karaoke name came from the fact that when some Japanese singers used Inoue’s machine to sing at live performances, many technicians commented that the orchestra box where the band should be was empty (“kara-okesutora”). Contrary to popular belief, a Filipino did not invent the Karaoke machine.

In Cagayan de Oro, early karaoke bars in the 1980’s used “minus-one” cassette tapes while the lyrics where shown on white projector screens from a projector. Minus one denotes that the orchestral music is from an original score but with the vocal renditions removed, hence people could sing along with it. From 2-3 original “sing-along” bars, the business grew out into some 20-plus sing-along bars all over town. By the late 1990’s however, all of these bars closed down with the entry of the KTV machine. Sometimes called “videoke,” KTV bars soon began springing up all around town. Smaller KTV bars use coin-operated machines while the longer-running, classier, and more popular KTV bars use “family-rooms or singing rooms” that can accommodate from 5 to as much as 20 persons.

Watever! Family KTV

watever ktv

Image Source | Facebook: Wat Ever Family KTV – CDO

This is probably one of the city’s most popular singing getaway, and it’s no surprise that sometimes the place can be booked full a couple of months in advance. It also happens to be located smack in the middle of the city’s busiest entertainment street so far, Corrales Avenue.

watever exterior

Flanked by classy restaurants, hotels, and other entertainment hubs, it’s a great singing venue for small group parties and get-togethers. But as we mentioned earlier, you need to check first if you need to book early. Rooms are based on hourly-rates.

For those who would rather play or dance, they even have Xbox rooms and Dance Central rooms. Like Watever, the karaoke experience and service is high-end but at affordable rates.

Willsbar KTV

Not to be confused with Will’s Place in case you search online, Willsbar is located at the corner of Pabayo and R.N. Abejuela Streets in Divisoria (beside Greenwich). It’s one of the few places with a cool home theater and laser/led light systems. It even has free internet, chat, and online computer game rooms for those who don’t feel like belting out their voices. Being in Divisoria always sees this place filled up almost every night. You’ll need early reservations if you want to celebrate in this KTV bar.

Galam Music Lounge

One of the first and oldest family KTV bars in the city, this KTV place is located at the corner of Seriña and Villarin Streets in Carmen (just across the Mt. Carmel Church).

Aside from its up-to-date HD-KTV systems and rooms, they also have movie rooms that can show 3D movies and gaming rooms for the kids (and kids at heart).

Their Wi-Fi is free. During the weekends they have DJ’s that play lounge and dance music for those who would rather sit around and drink or dance the night away.

Loreto’s

Loretos grill

Loreto’s has come a long way to become a popular KTV lounge bar. One of the oldest business establishments in the city located at the corner of Tomas Saco and 6th Streets in Nazareth, the business started out as a billiards place and live band rehearsal/recording venue. Later on they opened the restaurant on the second floor with billiard rooms below.

loretos interior

Today, it is one of the oldest and most popular KTV getaways with rooms that can accommodate from 6 to 20 persons. They also have function rooms that can be equipped with KTV’s for a singing party. At the restaurant you can enjoy the good food while listening to the live band. A few of their rooms are even equipped with both KTV and a billiards table so everyone can have fun.

LED KTV and Bar

Led ktv bar

Located along Corrales Avenue near the busiest section of the street, this KTV place is also one of the city’s more popular singing venues because of its affordable rates. Aside from special occasions, the venue has become a popular singing hangout among friends and officemates looking to unwind after a busy day or a busy week. However, there are three rooms only, one being the VIP, so you need to either go early or reserve in advance. For those who don’t want to sing, they have the Glow Club beside the KTV bar for some DJ dance music or live bands.

Microphone Hero

One of the newest additions to the KTV scene, Microphone Hero is located inside the Lifestyle District along Corrales Avenue (in front of Capitol University).

Its catchy named themed rooms became an instant hit and their room design is a little bit different from the usual KTV bar rooms that you find.

microphone hero adam levine

You can sing on a stage and the LED TV viewing can be seen through the whole room, making sing-alongs easier. The prices are even surprisingly affordable for such a high end KTV place.

The Voice Republic

The voice republic

This is the newest KTV bar to open at the Consortium Building on the 3rd floor, along Corrales Avenue. This KTV place is becoming a growing popular hangout for even the younger generation as well as millennials and the older generation. Aside from having KTV rooms and a movie room, it also features a live band every weekend with an entrance fee of PhP100 with a free bottle of beer. They also have a daily Happy Hour from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. with an entrance fee of PhP100.

Feeling a need to scream? Why not belt out your stress at any of the popular KTV bars listed above. Not only do they all have great air-conditioned rooms and great karaoke systems, but their services are top notch with some good food and amenities to boot. Going alone is not an option; going with friends or family is a definite requirement, and more fun.

Hot Stop used to be one of the tenants at the Food Bazaar but even though they’re no longer at the bazaar they’re still operating their shop at Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City. To contact them for orders and catering services, here are their contact numbers: 0917 3099 725 and 880 1365.

Weekend at the Strip Food Bazaars somehow mimics the days when the Night Café in Divisoria existed – of course minus the clothing stalls – until some yoyo-brained politician decided to end the nights of the Night Café. The Strip is far safer of course, it being inside the Limketkai Center and flanked on three sides by high walls and other buildings (Pete’s Patriots on the left and Pizza Republic on the right) while the entrance is fenced and well-guarded.

IMG_0811 copy

This is due to the fact that The Strip occupies a well-guarded parking lot during the day and weekdays, of which it is converted into The Strip for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Night, with a medium sized stage set out on the right side of the wall for the live performances. It’s something different during the weekends as it offers something away from the noisy bustles of the city’s well known entertainment arcades and districts.

Are you a picky drinker, selective drinker, straight drinker, beer drinker, or no holds barred drinker? Or perhaps there’s no category to your type of drinking? Whatever type of drinker you are, Cagayan de Oro now can boast a watering hole for anybody and everybody.

Limketkai Luxe Hotel’s “The Lounge”

The Lounge at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel offers the finest wines, beer and cocktails in the city from 8 pm – 12 noon.

It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day since the place also has Live Entertainment to accompany the guests. Visit The Lounge today and share a few drinks, great conversations with your companions.

Seda Hotel’s Misto Restaurant and “Happy Hour”

Seda Centrio Hotel presents its Happy Hour, called “It’s Beer Time: Why Limit Happy to an Hour?” This is at the hotel’s Misto Restaurant on the 4th floor from Monday to Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

During the happy hour, all local beers are at P80 (net) per bottle while all other alcoholic beverages are at 30% discount per glass. Of course, the happy hour isn’t just about beers since Misto sells a wide array of alcoholic variations for everyone’s taste. For those not into alcoholic drinks, Misto makes available its “virgin mocktails” selection. It’s the drinks available on the menu with the same mixture minus the alcohol content. They also serve the most unique “pulutan” in the city. They’re located right beside Ayala Centrio Mall.

The Wine Cellar

The Wine Cellar only opens at 5:00 p.m. up until a little beyond 12 midnight. The atmosphere inside is very peaceful, quiet, and perfect for conversations, even if you have a table on the outside. It’s a big difference from all the noise from bars and other drinking holes you find in the city.

During weekends there is a bit of a large crowd, but the atmosphere is still kind of peaceful, occasionally punctuated by bursts of laughter and giggly conversations. The majority of the wines and liquors that they sell aren’t available in major supermarkets in the city, or in any supermarket for that matter.

This is because many of their products come directly from the manufacturers or wineries all over the Philippines or are imported from other parts of the world. They have wine and liquor from the finest wineries from Chile, New Zealand, France, Italy, the United States, South Africa, Spain, and more countries. They’re located along J.R. Borja Extension at the Great Spot Arcade, next to Lefty’s.

The Hungry Plate

This restaurant and bar just opened along Corrales Avenue beside Boy Zugba. They serve very good American dishes and their entrees and appetizers are made just for drinkers and liquor.

In their Tap Room, they serve craft beers created by various beer makers in the country. It also introduces the very first craft beer brewer in Cagayan de Oro, named White Rapids. Other craft beers come from Manila, Tagaytay, Iligan, and Cebu. You need to watch out for the Alcohol by Volume (ABV) and the International Bittering Unit (IBU) so what you order suites your taste. Prices are between P150 and P275. They have a special called “Beer Flights” that serve 4 types of craft beers for P360.

Roof Top Lounge and Bar

This lounge bar is located at the 5th floor of the Juan Fuel building along J.R. Borja Extension. It’s fast becoming one of the city’s popular night life destinations in a district that is fast becoming a popular go-to area almost similar to Corrales Avenue.

It’s a nice bar that offers beer, an array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in a party atmosphere that’s perfect for large groups. It has a closed bar area as well as an al fresco area.

They have regular promos like any beer bucket order gets you free pulutan. They also serve the best southern bourbons you won’t find anywhere else in the city and really good food for meals.

Junno Deli Café and Gastropub

Aside from the good food, this is probably one of the few places in the city that sells San Miguel Draft Beer and a wide selection of wines, other beers, wines, and other liquor drinks.

Image Source | Facebook: Junno DeliCafe

Image Source | Facebook: Junno DeliCafe

Many will swear to the restaurant’s bestsellers such as Bitterballen and Kassouffle and Patatas Bravas. But going back to the food, they do serve really good food.

Image Source | Facebook: Junno DeliCafe

Image Source | Facebook: Junno DeliCafe

Their Porter Steak and salads are truly delectable. But many come here for the draft beer and wine that you won’t find anywhere else.

Image Source | Facebook: Junno DeliCafe

Image Source | Facebook: Junno DeliCafe

As the name implies, they’re a cross between a restaurant serving very good British food and a drinking pub hole Londoners usually call a gastropub. They’re located inside the Lifestyle District along Corrales Extension. You need to look closely as they’re located almost at the end of the restaurant lined street, almost in front of the new One Providence Building.

Mango Mania Al Fresco

No, we’re not kidding and this isn’t a typo. If you visit the main branch of Mango Mania at the Lifestyle District, they set up an al fresco area where they serve different liquor drink mixes, some mixed with fresh fruits or fruity juices.

img_5056-copy-1024x768

12833249_10207821379146543_1696088502_n

img_5064-copy-768x1024

They also serve straight liquor by the bottle or glass or local beers. Their must try is their Mango Rhum, served by the glass or bottle. If you’re a group of 4, one bottle is enough for everyone. This is one place you can go and drink and still stay healthy. No kidding.

The Lounge – Mallberry Suites Business Hotel

Not many people know that Mallberry Suites has been granted 4-star hotel status; even more people aren’t aware that on the second floor is their spacious The Lounge that serves an array of beers, liquor, and non-alcoholic beverages.

If you want to take a dip in their indoor pool, they’ll gladly serve your drinks or food at the poolside tables. If you dig really great food with your drinks or want to listen to a good jazz band, their restaurant or lobby bar will also be happy to serve you. But The Lounge is more than enough if you just want to kick back, relax, and have a drink. They’re located at the back of Robinson’s Center at the Limketkai Center.

Sure there are a lot of places in the city where you can enjoy drinking, may it be spent with your close friends or even strangers you can get to meet. Just a piece of advice, be a responsible drinker by drinking moderately. Anyway, drinking should always mean that you are celebrating, and that should make you happy and not the other way around.

Club Illusion – Playing Tricks with Your Eyes Using Illusion Effects, Offering the Most Enjoyable Party Experience & the Best Flaming Shots in Cdo

If you’re familiar with the popular song in the 90’s Just An Illusion by the group Imagination, as soon as you enter the premises of Club Illusion, your mind jumps back to these song lyrics:

“It’s just an illusion, illusion, illusion

Could it be that it’s just an illusion

Putting me back in all this confusion

Could it be that it’s just an illusion now

Could it be that it’s just an illusion”

Because the main theme and concept of the club is just that: to create Illusions.

Club Illusion is one of the newest dance, rave, and events bar in Cagayan de Oro City that only opened last March 2016. They are located at the corner of Corrales Avenue and Justo Ramonal Street.

How It All Started

After Mark and Melody Bland– the proprietors – got married in Abu Dhabi (capital of the United Arab Emirates) and working several jobs for 7 years, they decided to return to the Philippines and try their hand at a business. They first took on a resort in Mindoro partnering with another Filipino in 2012.

14572553_120300000471978024_614793159_o

Unfortunately, due to the accessibility problems of Mindoro that caused logistical and supply problems, they gave up the business and moved back to Cagayan de Oro. After running around the city with Melody’s relatives in search of a business location, they finally found a space at the corner of Corrales Avenue and Justo Ramonal Street in December of last year.

14550880_120300000477307127_1122714623_o

In spite of the building being in some disrepair, they began demolition and construction work by January of 2016. They had a soft opening on May. Aside from the illusions concept, Mark calls the place a “community bar” because everyone is welcome to the club, even if you cross dress.

img_3295

In spite of some problems after their soft opening due to some environment problems and a few theft attempts, the club is now operating smoothly and customers come and go (often coming and hardly going) almost on a daily basis. On weekends they are often filled to the brim.

Meet The Owners

Mark Bland and Melody Ligtas-Bland have one son, Aaron, and all three of them are happily running Club Illusion.

Mark and Melody Bland - Owners of Club Illusion

Mark and Melody Bland – Owners of Club Illusion

Mark is from Scotland and has been holding several jobs in the hospitality and food service industry for 22 years. He used to be a professional tennis and football player in the past. (one of his past opponents was Andy Murray). At Camella, Mark opened a football academy for inspiring football players.

Melody is a native Kagay-anon and went to college at the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST), taking up Education. She eventually wanted to try her hand in working abroad, and it was in Abu Dhabi that she met Mark. She is presently a Barangay Councilor at Barangay 35, with her father being the Barangay Captain.

Experiencing the club with no illusions

The inside of the club is filled with what Mark Bland calls, “illusion highlights.” For instance, some parts of the wall have what looks like “glass windows that look like tunnels leading off somewhere.”

img_3286

Some customers are so curious at these illusions that they peer through the glass, thinking there might be a tunnel of some sort. And if you look closely at the club’s logo, this in itself is an illusion.

14610792_120300000475041351_344056043_n

When the club first opened, they only served drinks and a few finger foods in the concept of English pubs. However, Mark realized that Filipinos love to eat and drink at the same time, so they decided to open a fully equipped kitchen.

img_3276

They also came up with a food menu aside from their liquor and drinks menu. Currently, Club Illusion’s customer favorites are the following; Nachos, Buffalo Wings and Spicy Pork Sisig.

They open at around 7:00 p.m. and close at 2:00 a.m. However, on some busy weekends, they close at 4:00 a.m., though the dance music stops by 2:00 a.m. There is an entrance fee of P50.

img_3300

They have DJ’s playing dance music almost every day. Just above the dance floors are two very noticeable poles for pole dancing. Customers are free to use the poles should they have pole dancing abilities.

img_3322

img_3324

img_3326

Club Illusion is famous for their flaming shots. We tried them ourselves and they really blew our minds! Their other best sellers are their draft towers, liters, and pitchers.

img_3313

Their draft towers are different from the usual beer towers you see in other bars. Their Tanduay, Primera, and Emperador sets are also quite sell-able.

The club has a new offering known as “The Original Knock-out Beer Bong” which can be availed for only P50.

Promos, Events and Future Plans

Beginning this week, customers will be encouraged to buy P10 tickets. At the end of the week, one winner will be chosen by raffle. Whatever cash prize is given, 25 percent of the winnings will automatically go to a chosen charity in the city.

img_3315

For the near future the owners are planning to create an illusion effects dance floor and floating stairs leading to the second floor. They’re also planning to have a Halloween rave party.

This rave party-like festival was presented by the Marketing and Sales Team of the Apple Tree Resort and Hotel led by Mr. Clement Dampal, head of marketing, in celebration of Oktoberfest but outside the usual Halloween parties that have become part and parcel for the end of October in Cagayan de Oro.

The event was divided into three parts; the beach volley, bikini open competition and the rave party.

Beach Volley

The party started off at around 4:00 p.m. with a Beach Volleyball Competition from six registered teams mostly from Opol, Misamis Oriental. After a single round-robin and playoffs, Team CU emerged as the overall winner.

img_4175

Each team is composed of at least 3 or 4 players, but only 3 players could play at any time.

Bikini Open

This was followed around 6:00 p.m. by the Bikini Open competition. This was the first of its kind in the city since rave parties during the fiesta or other special occasions are bereft of such.

img_4249

img_4290

This is also given the fact that the venue of the dance festival is a beachfront, and that Cagayan de Oro is well known for its hot beauties.

img_4359

img_4363

Of the seven beauties who ramped onstage for the title, three were eventually selected as the winners: an overall titlist with the 1st and 2nd runner-ups.

Then, the Bombeats, a local dance group, performed a hip-hop dance number on stage. From here, the dancing began with the electronic dance music pulsing with every bass beat.

Through the night a continuous laser light show was showing on the dance floor. A pyrotechnics show briefly interrupted the dancing, to the cheers of everyone present.

Forth & Tay Holds Grand Opening at the Lifestyle District

The Forth & Tay Fine Wines and Spirits held its grand opening on Friday, November 18, 2016 at its new location at the Lifestyle District along Corrales Extension.

img_4992

You could say this grand opening is also a re-opening of sorts. The original Forth & Tay Wine Shop used to be located at the Great Spot Arcade along J.R. Borja Extension some years back but closed and now it has reopened as a full bar and Wine shop as well in a more glamorous location.

img_4991

The new Forth &Tay Fine Wines and Spirits at the Lifestyle District sports an elegant bar and clearly displays row upon row of the most affordable wines and spirits as well as the more highly priced ones.

img_4988

Customers have a choice of either ordering by the glass or by the bottle. Local and foreign beers are also sold for those who crave more for the malty drinks.

img_5037

They are now the only establishment in Cagayan de Oro City that sells some rare spirits such as single malt whisky from Scotland (as compared to the more common southern whiskies from the US being sold), vodka from France and Sweden, tequila from Mexico (the pure ones), brandy from France and Spain, gin from England (not the UK), and they even have imported beer from Australia. They even have rum all the way from Barbados, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico.

img_4999

img_5030  img_5029

img_5035

For the red and white wine connoisseurs, their wines hail all the way from South Africa, Australia, Chile, Argentina, France, Italy, Spain, and New Zealand. Most of what they are selling are not the common brands normally seen in supermarkets and other wine shops.

img_4989

The Forth & Tay Fine Wines and Spirits grand opening was attended by a mix of mainstream media and top bloggers from the city.

15086953_10210043541539214_905503960_n

img_4996

After the usual ribbon cutting and blessing, the guests were treated with some live songs from a trio-chamber band.

img_5041

Food was served buffet style while some bottles of wine were opened and served to the guests as a way of wine tasting to sample what Forth & Tay has to offer.

img_5020

img_5017

img_5007

img_5005

There was even the traditional lechon even if the proprietor is of Scottish descent.

img_5009

Those who had attended the opening of the former Forth & Tay noted that the new place is significantly larger than its predecessors.

img_5040

The establishment’s name is actually an amalgamation from two words, “Firth” and “Tay.” Firth is a Scottish Gaelic word for “river” while Tay is the name of the longest river in Scotland. Thus, “Firth of Tay” could mean “River Tay.” The story goes that when the establishment was registered locally the name Firth was misspelled to “Forth.”

Drinking Spots in Cagayan de Oro with Great Food

$

0

Filipinos have a special way of drinking that is unique compared to other nationalities. Pinoys love to drink AND eat at the same time. Well, not really eat like eating a regular meal, but we love to have what we call in our vernacular as, “pulutan.” This pulutan has symbolized the Filipino way of social drink so much that there are certain “viands” that specialize in being, well, “pulutan.” The most popular that we know of are the common kinilaw and sisig, while the more “homely” pulutans are the peanuts, ding-dongs, and mixed nuts.

Since Kagay-anons, like every other fun-loving Filipino loves to occasionally go out and have some socialized drinking with great food, we picked some love drinking spots that also serve really good food that goes well with your beer, liquor, or wine.

The Oak Room

This new drinking spot that only opened in December 2016 is located along Corrales Avenue beside The Nest. It is considered the city’s first gentleman’s lounge that specializes in serving whiskey. Aside from this specialty they also serve scotch, vodka, cognac, brandy, champagne, tequila, and a host of wine selections.

Image Source | Facebook: The Oak Room CDO

They also serve Japanese and Taiwanese (not Chinese, there’s a big difference) liquor and beer. The sort of whiskey they serve is nothing short of high quality with names like Southern Comfort and Wild Turkey.

Image Source | Facebook: The Oak Room CDO

Their mostly imported beers include names like Hoegaarden, Stella Artois, Blue Moon, Hitachino Nest White Ale, Heineken, and Corona Extra.

Image Source | Facebook: The Oak Room CDO

The ambiance of the place has to be experienced since describing it alone is not enough justice for the place. What is obvious is that The Oak Room is cozy and comfortable.

Burrow Bar and Brew

This bar is located at the Jacinto Tan Building at the corner of Capistrano and Mabini Streets.

Image Source | Facebook: Burrow Bar and Brew

This almost-at-the-center downtown destination in Divisoria is described as a hole-in-the-wall café and bar like those you would find in the urban neighborhoods of Paris.

Image Source | Facebook: Burrow Bar and Brew

They serve a wide variety of drinks for those group gatherings and social drinking in a friendly ambiance and atmosphere.

Image Source | Facebook: Burrow Bar and Brew

Image Source | Facebook: Burrow Bar and Brew

This bar even serves really good coffee, having sponsored a few Latte contests in the past.

Pete’s Patriots Filipino Gastropub

They’re located at the Rosario Arcade at the Limketkai Mall. Their main concept is to be the first ever Filipino Gastro Pub based on the gastro pub concepts of British pubs, but with its own Mindanao or “Kagay-anon” lifestyle concept.

Image Source |  One Happy Story

Customers who have been to Pete’s Patriots will certainly experience unforgettable delicious food, quality service, edgy ambiance, good music, and great drinks. They serve their famous Revolution 15 Shots as well as their Flaming Patriot Killer and Blue Ocean.

Image Source | Mae Ann Roa

Aside from the drinks, they have great food selections on their menu, especially their Lunch Specials at only P150 each. There’s the Batol Patong Sisig, Beer Braised Sausage, Sisig + Lumpia, General Tso (chicken wings), and Salt and Pepper Squid. They also have their Sampler Platter good for around two or three persons with heroic names such as Luna, Aguinaldo, and Del Pilar.

Junno Deli Café and Gastropub

This gastro pub is located inside the Lifestyle District along Corrales Avenue Extension.

Image Source | Facebook: Junno DeliCafe

Image Source | Facebook: Junno DeliCafe

They serve good Dutch and fusion dishes prepared, cooked, and served in a different way. Aside from the good food, this is probably one of the few places in the city that sells San Miguel Draft Beer and a wide selection of wines, other beers, wines, and other liquor drinks.
